Patriarch of Constantinople, who was in conflict with the Church of Rome from about 820 to about 891. Reigned 858-67, 877-86. A scholar who taught theology and rhetoric at the capital's university, and also a powerful high-ranking official at the imperial court, he was appointed patriarch to succeed the deposed Patriarch Ignatios (reigned 847-858, 867-877), even though he was a layman. Pope Nicholas I intervened in this appointment, which led to a conflict between the two churches known as the Photian Schism. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
