...Its central market still supports the city's kitchens, and Campo San Bartolomeo at the foot of the Rialto Bridge is a lively meeting place for the city's citizens after work. The shipyards (Arsenale), which played an important role in this maritime city-state, are located in the Castello district in the east, and the surrounding area is home to many workers and common people. The main entrance to Venice was originally the small square (Piazzetta) of St. Mark, which opened onto the lagoon and was decorated with two large columns. However, the construction of the railway bridge (1846) and the automobile bridge (1932) connecting the city to the mainland (Terraferma) in modern times has significantly changed the city's structure, and the railway station and automobile terminal in the northwest have become the new entrances to the city.
