A Greek island in the eastern Mediterranean, about 100 km from the southern tip of Greece. In modern Greek it is called Crete. Most of it is mountainous, with Mount Izi (2,456 m) being the highest point. It is mainly farmed and raised livestock, and produces wheat, olives, grapes, and oranges. The northern coast is a popular tourist destination, and it is one of the most vibrant regions in Greece. In ancient times it flourished as the center of Cretan civilization. After Roman and Byzantine rule, it became a Venetian commercial and military base in 1204. It was under Turkish control from 1669, but gained autonomy in 1898 and was annexed by Greece in 1913. The main city is Heraklion. Area: 8,336 km2 . Population: 623,065 (2011).
