Nagybánya (English spelling)

Representatives of this movement include Benczúr Gyula (1844-1920), who studied under K. von Piloty in Munich and produced a series of large historical paintings, Székely and Munkács, who tried out new contemporary techniques in Paris but sought expression specific to their ethnic group, László Paál (1846-79), who was drawn to the Barbizon School, and Pál Szinyei-Merse (1845-1920), who was likened to Impressionism for his precise fixation of the brilliance of divided colors on the canvas. Following their success, artist colonies were formed in Nagybánya (now Baia-Mare) in northern Transylvania from 1896 onwards, and showed various aspects ranging from Post-Impressionism, Symbolism, Fauvism and Expressionism.
[present day]
The leading architect who used historicist and national motifs was Lechner Ödön (1845-1914).
