In Spanish, this term refers to a leader or political boss. Many of these leaders emerged in Latin America shortly after independence in the first half of the 19th century, and they generally shared the following characteristics: (1) they were charismatic, (2) they had military power with armed peasants as their private soldiers, (3) many of them came from landowning families, and (4) they rejected the parliamentary system and aspired to dictatorship. Possible reasons for the emergence of such leaders in Latin America shortly after independence include the fact that only military power could fill the power vacuum that arose following the collapse of the colonial system, and that the masses, tired of the political turmoil that followed after independence, longed for the emergence of a strong leader.
