This refers to ink-wash paintings of bamboo in Chinese and Japanese paintings. When Wen Tong (1018-79), a literati from the late Northern Song Dynasty, combined the style of cursive writing with the silhouette of bamboo, it acquired a new stylistic life, and his cousin Su Shi provided a theoretical basis for it, leading to a rapid popularity as a form of ink play among literati. After the creation of ink-wash bamboo, various themes such as ink plums, ink orchids, and ink chrysanthemums, known as ink flowers, began to be taken up, and this developed into ink-wash, floral, and miscellaneous painting, a genre that characterizes Chinese painting.
