Eisenstaedt, A. (English spelling) EisenstaedtA

... In Germany, from the late 1920s, the methodology of reportage photography gradually began to take a clear shape through series of photographs about the real conditions of low-class workers that were published in the journal of the Federation of German Workers' Photographers, and essays by Walter Nettelbeck. Stephan Roland, who became editor-in-chief of the magazine Münchner Illustrierte, clarified the principles of shooting and composing photographs, and with the emergence of excellent photographers, around 1930, photo weekly magazines reached their peak (graphic journalism). Photographers who were active in this environment include Martin Munkacsi (born in Romania), Alfred Eisenstaedt (born in Hungary), R. Capa (born in Hungary), and Yonosuke Natori (born in Japan). Yonosuke Natori returned to Japan from Germany in 1932 and established the Nippon Koubou (Japan Workshop). Together with Ihei Kimura and Ken Domon, he put into practice the methods of reportage photography he had learned in Germany, making a major contribution to opening the way for photojournalism in Japan.

...But then in 1978, it was revived as a monthly magazine, with a circulation of 1.33 million copies (1980).
The graphic magazine Life, which was launched in 1936, started out with the photographs of four photographers: Margaret Bourke-White, assistant editor of Fortune and already an established photographer; Alfred Eisenstaedt, who had worked for various German graphic magazines but had been pursued by the Nazis and had come to America; Thomas McAvoy, a news cameraman for Time; and Peter Stackpole, who was active in the San Francisco area. Life's photographs were expected to go beyond simple photographic commentary and sensationalism, and to have a deep understanding of the subject or theme and a brilliant interpretation. As one way of achieving this, the photo essay format was invented.
