Located in eastern Canada, Charlottetown is the smallest province in Canada. Its area is 5,657 km2 and its population is 136,100 (1991). Its capital is Charlottetown. It is isolated from the Atlantic Ocean by Nova Scotia, and has a warm climate and fertile soil, so agriculture remains the province's largest industry. Potatoes are exported both domestically and internationally, followed by dairy products. The second largest industry is manufacturing, primarily food manufacturing, and third is construction. The province is familiar to Japanese people as the setting for LM Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables series, and tourism to Anne's historic sites is becoming an important industry in the province.
