Los Angeles originated as a small farming village. In 1781, the Spanish governor Felipe de Neve led a group of settlers from Mexico and built a small village around the current Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles. Twelve years earlier, when Gaspar de Portolá, heading for Monterey Bay, stopped here, he named the nearby river "Rio de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles de Porciúncula (River of the Virgin Mary, Queen of the Angels of Porciúncula)," so Neve shortened the name to Los Angeles, which later came to be pronounced in an English style.

　ロサンゼルスの発祥は小さな農村であった。1781年スペイン人ネベFelipe de Neve総督がメキシコから開拓民の一団を率いて，現在のダウンタウンのオルベラ街あたりを中心に小さな村落を建設したのが起りである。これより12年前，モンテレー湾を目ざしていたポルトラGaspar de Portoláがここに立ち寄ったときに，近くを流れていた川を〈聖母マリア(ポルシウンクラの天使たちの女王)の川Río de Nuestra Señora la Reina de Los Ángeles de Porciúncula〉と名づけていたので，ネベはその村を略してロス･アンヘレスと呼び，これがのちに英語風に発音されるようになった。…
