A town in Oshima District, Kagoshima Prefecture, occupying the eastern half of Okinoerabu Island. Most of the town is low flat land, with a coral reef surrounding the coast. Transportation was previously inconvenient, but a port and airport have been developed and the town is connected to Kagoshima City. The town produces sugarcane, lilies, and pineapples, and has a sugar factory. Livestock farming is also thriving. 鹿児島県大島郡,沖永良部(おきのえらぶ)島の東半部を占める町。ほとんどが低い平地で,海岸はサンゴ礁に囲まれる。交通不便の地であったが,港湾・空港が整備され,鹿児島市と連絡。サトウキビ,ユリ,パイナップルを産し,製糖工場がある。畜産も盛ん。1862年この地に流された西郷隆盛ゆかりの多くの史跡がある。40.39km2。7114人(2010)。
