Indonesian Islamic Council

It was founded in November 1943 under the Japanese military administration as the Indonesian Islamic Council (Masyumi is the abbreviated name for this council), which brought together Islamic forces, and was formed as an Islamic political party in November 1945 in Yogyakarta after independence. This party included both modern Islamic factions (affiliated with colonial-era Islamic parties and the Islamic social organization Muhammadiyah) and traditional Islamic factions centered in East Java, but in 1952 the latter split off to form Nahdlatul Ulama. ...
