A plant disease in which the pathogen grows exclusively in xylem vessels, causing impaired conduction. The accumulated pathogen, polysaccharides secreted by the pathogen, and decomposed plant tissues block the xylem vessels, causing the stems and leaves to wilt and die. Fusarium oxysporum (an imperfect fungus) causes vascular diseases in many plants, including tomato wilt, fusarium wilt in cucumbers, watermelons, melons, and sweet potatoes, and yellows in radishes, cabbage, and strawberries. When the roots or stems of diseased plants are cut, browning of the xylem vessels is easily observed. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
