Naxi people (English spelling) Nà xī zú
One of China's minority groups. Belongs to the Tibeto-Burman group. They live in Lijiang Naxi Autonomous County, Yunnan Province, as well as Weixi, Zhongdian, and Ninglang Yi Autonomous County, and in the Sichuan border area. The population is about 280,000 (1990). They live in highlands with an average altitude of 2,700m. In the past, they engaged in both farming and livestock raising, but nowadays they are said to be primarily farming. Their main crops are rice, corn, wheat, potatoes, and beans. Since ancient times, they have appeared in Chinese historical documents under the names "Mo-so" and "Mo-so," and even in recent years, Chinese and Western researchers often use the name "Mo-so."

中国の少数民族の一つ。チベット・ビルマ語系族に属する。雲南省麗江ナシ族自治県を中心として,維西県,中甸県,寧蒗イ(彝)族自治県,四川省境域一帯に居住する。人口は約28万(1990)。その居住地は平均標高2700mの高地で,古くは農耕と牧畜をあわせて営んでいたが,現在は農耕を主とするといわれる。主要作物は米,トウモロコシ,小麦,ジャガイモ,豆類等である。往古より漢籍史料には〈麼些〉〈磨些〉等の名称であらわれ,近年にいたっても中国,欧米の研究者の間では〈麼些(モソ)Mo‐so〉の名称を用いることが少なくない。
