...This also led to the rise of military power and a coup d'état. The Numeyrī (military-originated) regime, which was established by the May 1969 revolution, continued in power for a long time until the coup d'état of 1985, but its secret was in its extensive ties with various political forces. In March 1972, Numeyrī signed the Addis Ababa Agreement with Anya Nya, a southern rebel group, putting an end to the civil war that had been continuing since independence and recognizing an autonomous government in the south.
