…Other great deities without Greek counterparts include Janus, the goddess of beginnings and gates, the earth goddess Tellus, Flora, the goddess of flowering, and Pomona, the goddess of fruition, all of whom governed limited areas. Unlike the Greek gods, these early Roman gods were not concrete beings with vivid individual contours, but were understood as divine powers numen, as wills and functions hidden within phenomena, and were treated with extremely careful and sometimes complicated ceremonies. However, their births were never mentioned, and marriages between gods, and therefore their genealogies were never an issue.
