(1) Patriarchs In Catholicism, the term refers to the ancestors of mankind as described in the Old Testament, namely, the ten from Adam to Noah before the great flood, but more narrowly, to the patriarchs who were the ancestors of Israel, namely, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and his twelve sons. The original word is used as the title of a bishop in a major diocese, but in that case it is translated as Patriarch (Patriarch). (2) The first emperor, the founder of a dynasty.
