Diary of Oyudonoue - Diary of Oyudonoue

This diary was written by a female court attendant who served in the upper room of the bathhouse in the Imperial Palace. Modeled on the court diaries of male court officials, it was written under a pseudonym by the female court attendant on duty. It was continued to be written from the early 15th century until the end of the Edo period, with only the entries published from 1477 (Bunmei 9) to 1687 (Jokyo 4). It covers a wide range of topics, from the Emperor's movements, regular special ceremonies, and investiture of ranks and appointments to negotiations and gift-giving with the Shogun and various daimyo, the Imperial household economy, and everyday affairs of the common people, making it a valuable historical source on politics, economics, and culture. In particular, it is unrivaled as a source of court lady language. It is included in Supplement 3 of Zoku Gunsho Ruiju.

内裏(だいり)の御湯殿上の間に祗候(しこう)した女官が記した日記。男官の殿上日記に倣い、当番の女官が仮名で記した。15世紀初頭より江戸時代末まで書き継がれたが、1477年（文明9）から1687年（貞享4）までの分が刊行されている。天皇の動静、恒例臨時の儀式、叙位任官の記事をはじめ、将軍や諸大名との交渉や贈答、皇室経済、市井の雑事に至るまで記す範囲は広く、政治、経済、文化の史料として貴重である。ことに女房詞(にょうぼうことば)の資料としてはこれに勝るものはない。『続群書類従』補遺3所収。
