Augite (English spelling)

Japanese: オージャイト（英語表記）augite

A type of calcium-rich clinopyroxene, it is the most common colored mineral in igneous rocks. It is also called augite. Its main chemical composition is (Ca, Mg, Fe ²⁺ ) ₂ Si ₂ O ₆ , with small amounts of Al, Fe ³⁺ , Ti, etc. When the Ca/(Ca + Mg + Fe ²⁺ ) ratio is 45-25%, it is called augite, when it is 25-15%, it is called subcalcic augite, and when the Mg/Fe ratio is less than 1, it is called ferroaugite and subcalcic ferroaugite. When it contains about 3-5% _{TiO 2} , it is called titanium augite.

Caに富む単斜輝石の一種で火成岩のもっとも普通な有色鉱物。〈普通輝石〉ともいう。主要化学組成は(Ca,Mg,Fe^2＋)₂Si₂O₆で，少量のAl,Fe^3＋，Tiなどを含む。Ca/(Ca＋Mg＋Fe^2＋)が45～25％のものをオージャイト，25～15％のものをサブカルシックオージャイト，Mg/Feが1より小さいものはフェロオージャイトおよびサブカルシックフェロオージャイトとよぶ。TiO₂を約3～5％含むものはチタンオージャイトという。
