His real surname was Ki. During the Nanboku-cho period, under Masayasu, he is said to have taken the name Hotta. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period, under Masatoshi, he first served the Ukita clan, and later served Tokugawa Ieyasu. Under his son Masamori, he was given 15,000 koku, and in 1635, he became a senior councilor. In the same year, he was granted 35,700 koku in Kawagoe, Musashi, and in 1636, he was granted 100,000 koku in Matsumoto, Shinano, and in 1637, he was granted 110,000 koku in Sakura, Shimousa. In 1660, under Masanobu, he was stripped of his fief, but his son Masayasu was granted 10,000 koku in Yoshii, Kozuke, in 1682, and transferred to Miyagawa, Omi, in 1698. He became a viscount in the Meiji period. Masamori's son Masatoshi was granted a fief of 10,000 koku in newly cultivated fields in Shimousa in the 4th year of Keian (51), and in the 1st year of Tenwa (1289), he was granted 87,000 koku (later 130,000 koku) in Koga, Shimousa and became a Tairo (chief councilor). His son Masanaka was granted 100,000 koku in Yamagata, Dewa, and then moved to Fukushima in Mutsu, and in 1746, during the reign of Masaaki, he was transferred to 100,000 koku in Sakura, Shimousa (later 130,000 koku). In the Meiji period, he was made a count. Masamori's son Masataka was also granted 10,000 koku in Sano, Shimotsuke in the 1st year of Jōkyō (1684). In 11th year of Genroku (98), he was transferred to Katata, Omi with 10,000 koku, but during the reign of Masaatsu, he was restored to his former territory of Sano with 16,000 koku. 本姓,紀氏。南北朝時代,正泰のとき,堀田氏を称したという。安土桃山時代,正利のとき初め宇喜多氏に,のち徳川家康に仕えた。子正盛のとき1万 5000石を与えられ寛永 12 (1635) 年老中となった。同 12年武蔵川越3万 5700石を,同 15年信濃松本 10万石を,同 19年には下総佐倉 11万石を領した。万治3 (60) 年正信のとき除封されたが,その子正休は天和2 (82) 年上野吉井1万石を与えられ,元禄 11 (98) 年近江宮川に移封。明治になって子爵。また正盛の子正俊が慶安4 (51) 年下総新墾田1万石を分封され,天和1年には下総古河8万 7000石 (のち 13万石) を領し大老となった。子正仲は出羽山形 10万石,さらに陸奥福島に移り,延享3 (1746) 年正亮のとき下総佐倉 10万石 (のち 13万石) に移封された。明治になって伯爵。正盛の子正高も貞享1 (1684) 年下野佐野に1万石で分与。元禄 11 (98) 年近江堅田に1万石で移封されたが,正敦のとき旧領佐野に復し1万 6000石。明治になって子爵。
