Joruri Gidayubushi (a type of Japanese recital). Sewamono (a domestic story). Two acts. Written by Suga Sensuke. First performed in December 1767 (Meiwa 4) at the Kita-Horie-za Theater in Osaka. Based on the love story of Osome Hisamatsu, this work is an adaptation of Kino Kaion's "Osome Hisamatsu's White-dyed Sleeves" (1710). Osome, the daughter of pawnbroker Aburaya Tarobei of Osaka Higashibori, is deeply in love with apprentice Hisamatsu. As her marriage to Yamagaya Seibei approaches, she worries, and at first she tries to make a bold decision, but in the end she commits a double suicide with Hisamatsu, who has been locked up in the storehouse. The first volume, "Aburaya," centers on the humor of lecherous clerk Zenroku, who has unrequited love for Osome. The lower volume, "Pawnshop," is notable for the passage in which Hisamatsu's Chikahisaku visits the shop and gives his opinion while wearing leather tabi socks that he received as a gift, and is commonly referred to as "Hisaku in Leather Tabi." It has also been adapted into kabuki, and "Aburaya" in particular is a script that emphasizes Zenroku's clownishness and is commonly called "Choinose." It is often performed under the title "Kore wa Hyoban Ukina no Yomiuri," which includes the "Kuramae" scene.
