An umbrella-like device that uses air resistance to slow the speed of a person or object falling through the air and land them safely. It is also called a parachute. It is a compound word of the Italian word parare, which means to protect, and the French word chute, which means to fall. It is said to have been used in China in the 1300s as the easiest way to realize the human desire to fly, and the idea of ​​it was recorded in Leonardo da Vinci's design sketches in the 1400s. In the 17th and 18th centuries, it was used as a spectacle for curiosity, but the first practical use is said to have been in an experiment by AJ Garnerin of France in 1797. Later, it was equipped for military balloons and to save the lives of airplane crew, and its uses expanded to include dropping and dropping people and supplies.

Current parachutes are classified into military and non-military, personnel and supplies, and air and ground use. In military use, parachutes are used for lifesaving, extending the flight time of flares, signals, and bombs, and for dropping troops, vehicles, weapons, ammunition, and other supplies. In non-military use, parachutes are used in sports, such as skydiving, dropping personnel and supplies to rescue stranded people, and slowing down spacecraft when returning to Earth. On land, parachutes are used for deceleration and braking, such as in drag chutes for military aircraft, for skiing downhill, and for racing cars. They are also being tested for use underwater as brakes for very large ships.

A typical structure is made up of a nylon umbrella body, a section for hanging personnel and supplies, and many strings connecting them. Most umbrellas are hemispherical, but for skydiving there are rectangular parachutes with a cross section like an airplane wing, and the direction of descent can be changed to a considerable extent by manipulating the strings. Handling and operating a parachute requires skill, and it is heavy, so it is virtually impossible to load a parachute on a passenger plane and use it to ensure the safety of passengers.

空中を落下する人や物の落下速度を空気の抵抗を利用して減速し、安全に着地させる傘状の器具。落下傘ともいう。イタリア語の「守る」parareとフランス語の「落下する」chuteとの合成語である。人間の「飛ぶ」欲望をもっとも安易に実現する手段として1300年代に中国で用いられたと伝えられているが、1400年代にはレオナルド・ダ・ビンチのデザイン・スケッチのなかにそのアイデアが記録されている。17、18世紀には見せ物として興味本位に使われたが、実用的には1797年のフランスのガルネランA. J. Garnerinの実験が最初といわれる。その後、軍用気球や飛行機搭乗員の救命用として装備されるようになり、さらに人員や物資の降下・投下などに用途が広がった。

　現在のパラシュートは、軍用と非軍用、人員用と物資用、空中用と地上用などに分類される。軍用としては救命用のほか、照明弾・信号弾や爆弾などの滞空時間の延長、兵員・車両・兵器・弾薬その他の物資の降下・投下用に使われる。非軍用としては、スポーツ、つまりスカイダイビングや、遭難者救助のための人員・物資の投下、宇宙船の地上帰還の際の減速などに使用されている。地上での用途は減速・制動用で、軍用機のドラッグシュート、スキーの急斜面滑降、競走用自動車などに用いられる。また、超大型船のブレーキ用として水中での使用も実験されている。

　一般的な構造としてはナイロン製の傘体(さんたい)、人員・物資のつり下げ部、およびそれらを結ぶ多くの紐(ひも)から構成される。傘体はほとんどが半球形であるが、スカイダイビング用には飛行機の翼のような断面をもつ四角形のパラシュートがあり、紐の操作によってかなりの範囲で降下の方向を変えることができる。パラシュートの取扱い・操作には熟練を要するほか、重量もかさむので、旅客機に搭載して乗客の安全確保に使用することはまず不可能である。
