Yazidi (English spelling)

Japanese: ヤジーディー（英語表記）Yazīdī

A minority group in northern Iraq. The origin of the name is unknown. They call themselves Dasin. They speak a dialect of Kurdish, but use Arabic in religious ceremonies. They formed as a group with a unique religion that blended the doctrines, rituals, and magical beliefs of Islam (especially Shiite and Islamic mysticism), Christianity (especially Nestorianism), Zoroastrianism, and other religions. The Ottoman Empire recognized their existence by granting their chief a sanjak (province) in northern Iraq. They believe in the existence of an angel (Malak Tawus) symbolized by a peacock, and value pilgrimages to the tomb of Sheikh 'Adi, who is identified with the angel, but they have been accused of being devil worshippers.
