Japanese: 松竹[株] - しょうちく

A production and distribution company for movies, plays, popular entertainment, and kabuki. Its predecessor was Shochiku Gomei-sha, founded in 1902 by brothers Matsujiro Shirai and Takejiro Otani. Starting out as a ticket seller at a Kyoto theater, it then moved on to directly manage one theater after another, controlling popular actors and dominating the theater world in both the east and west. In 1920, Shochiku Kinema Gomei-sha was established. It adopted the structure of American film companies and produced upbeat films and films featuring women, creating an era. It is known for many films, including Japan's first full-scale talkie, Madame and Wife (1931), the melodrama Aizen Katsura (1938), and the Tora-san series, It's Tough Being a Man. Directors who have worked for the company include Yasujiro Ozu, Heinosuke Gosho, Torajiro Saito, Keisuke Kinoshita, and Yoji Yamada. In 1995, the company opened the theme park Kamakura Cinema World, but due to poor performance it closed in 1998. For foreign films, the company established a distribution network with Tokyu and Toei, and was blessed with hits such as The Lord of the Rings, Finding Nemo, and The Last Samurai. 映画・演劇・大衆演芸・歌舞伎の製作配給会社。白井松次郎・大谷竹次郎兄弟が1902年設立した松竹(まつたけ)合名社が前身。京都の劇場の中売りからはじめ，次々と劇場の直営に乗り出し，人気役者を掌握して，東西の演劇界を制圧。1920年には松竹キネマ合名社を創立。米国の映画企業機構を取り入れ，明るい映画・女性映画を製作し，一時代を築いた。日本最初の本格トーキー《マダムと女房》（1931年），メロドラマ《愛染かつら》（1938年），寅さんシリーズ《男はつらいよ》など多くの映画で知られる。監督は小津安二郎，五所平之助，斎藤寅次郎，木下恵介，山田洋次らが活躍。1995年にはテーマパーク〈鎌倉シネマワールド〉を開設したが，不振で1998年閉鎖。洋画では東急・東映と配給網を整え，《ロード・オブ・ザ・リング》《ファインディング・ニモ》《ラスト・サムライ》などヒット作に恵まれた。本社東京。2011年資本金330億円，2011年２月期売上高902億円。2011年２月期売上構成（％）は，映像関連59，演劇26，不動産９，その他９。
