Near East

A regional concept centered on Western Europe, meaning the "near east" of the East, and contrasting with the Middle East (middle east) and the Far East (extremely distant east). Specifically, it refers to the area beginning with the Balkan Peninsula in Eastern Europe, which was occupied by the Ottoman Empire before World War I, and including Crete, Asia Minor, Rhodes, Cyprus, and the Levant (the eastern Mediterranean coastal region including Lebanon, Syria, and Israel). However, the border with the Middle East is unclear, and the area is often lumped together under the convenient name of the Middle East.

西ヨーロッパを中心にした地域概念で、東方のうちの「近い東方」を意味し、中東（中ほどの東方）、極東（極めて遠い東方）と対をなす。具体的には、第一次世界大戦前、オスマン帝国によって領有されていた東ヨーロッパのバルカン半島から始まり、クレタ島、小アジア半島、ロードス島、キプロス島、レバント地方（レバノン、シリア、イスラエルなどの東部地中海沿岸地方）などの範囲をさす。ただ、中東との境界は明確でなく、中近東という便宜的な名称で一括されることも多い。
