… In Italy, where the tradition of using Latin as a written language is deeply rooted, the use of the 'volgare' (as Italian was called in contrast to Latin) as a literary language came quite late. In any case, the oldest written record using this vernacular, apart from the short 'Mysteries of Verona' (c. 800), which can be interpreted as either Italian or Latin, is found in the 'Placito Capuano', a document dating back to March 960. This is a record of a lawsuit over the ownership of land at the Abbey of Monte Cassino, and the testimony of witnesses is inserted in Italian (reflecting the Campanian dialect) into the main text, which is written in Latin. …
