He was India's greatest astronomer and astrologer, who lived around the 6th century. He wrote the astronomical book Pañcasiddhāntikā (550), which combined traditional Indian astronomy, which had developed in the Vedic period and by the 5th century had developed, with elements of Greek and Roman astronomy. This book is one of the most important sources for elucidating earlier astronomy. Furthermore, his work Bṛhat-saṃhitā is an encyclopedia that covers not only astronomy and astrology, but also a wide variety of other topics.
