Zlatoust - Zlatoust (English spelling) Златоуст/Zlatoust

An industrial city in the Chelyabinsk Oblast in the western part of the Russian Federation. It is located in the valley of the Ai River, a tributary of the Ufa River, in the southern Ural Mountains. Population 198,400 (1999). It began with the construction of an iron and copper smelting plant in 1754, and was known for producing high-quality steel needed for weapons (swords). In 1860, the first steel cannon in Russia was produced at an arms factory. Production of high-quality steel expanded even after the Russian Revolution, and it was here that the first ball bearings in Russia were produced. High-quality steel is also used to manufacture precision machinery, heavy machinery, and watches. The city stretches for more than 40 kilometers along a narrow river valley, with factories built on the flat land at the bottom of the valley and houses built on the slopes. A railway and highway run through the city connecting Chelyabinsk and Ufa.

ロシア連邦西部、チェリャビンスク州の工業都市。ウラル山脈南部、ウファ川支流アイ川の河谷にある。人口19万8400(1999)。1754年、製鉄、製銅工場が建設されたのが始まりで、武器(剣)に必要な良質鋼の生産で知られていた。1860年、ロシアで初めて鋼鉄製の大砲を武器製造工場で製作した。ロシア革命後も良質鋼の生産は拡大され、ロシアで初めてボールベアリングを生産したのもここである。また良質鋼を利用して精密機械、重機械の製作、時計の生産が行われている。市は狭い河谷に沿って40キロメートル以上も延び、谷底の平地に工場、斜面に住宅が建つ。市内をチェリャビンスクとウファを結ぶ鉄道、ハイウェーが通る。
