Senjogahara is a plateau including marshland located north of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It is located on the floor of a basin surrounded by mountains such as Mt. Nantai. Its area is about 4.4 square kilometers. At an altitude of about 1,400 meters, it is 130 meters higher than Lake Chuzenji. It was originally a lake filled with water, but it was filled with soil and sand caused by erosion of the mountainsides of Mt. Nantai (2,486 meters) and Mt. Taro (2,368 meters). It is now dried up, and the water surface can only be seen after rainfall at Akanuma, south of Sanbonmatsu. However, the marshland spreads over the flat area between National Route 120 and the Yukawa River, and is designated as a special protected area of Nikko National Park. In the high moor, Carex gracilis and Cottongrass form valleys, and marsh plants such as Swamp grass, Sphagnum moss, and Sundew create a unique landscape, surrounded by Japanese lily. A nature trail runs through the larch forest along the Yukawa River, and a boardwalk crosses the marshland to connect Yutaki and Ryuzunotaki. National Route 120, which connects Nikko and Numata, runs through the plain. The name Senjogahara is said to come from a legend that the giant snake of Mt. Nantai and the giant centipede of Mt. Akagi fought over territory here. It takes 15 minutes by bus from Chugushi Shrine to Akanuma. Senjogahara was registered as a Ramsar site in 2005 as part of the "Oku-Nikko Marshes."
