...The remains of the first early agricultural village discovered in the Zagros Mountains east of Kirkuk in northeastern Iraq. Excavations were carried out between 1948 and 1955 by R.J. Braidwood (1907- ) of the University of Chicago's Oriental Institute, with the aim of investigating the process from food gathering to food production. Although it is now common knowledge, this was the first excavation in which archaeologists collaborated with natural scientists in fields such as geology, zoology, and botany, ushering in a new era in archaeological excavation in West Asia.
