Ashikaga War Chronicles

Japanese: 足利治乱記 - あしかがちらんき

A war tale that chronicles the upheavals of the Muromachi Shogunate from the Northern and Southern Court period to the Kakitsu War. The date of its creation is unknown. It records many of the achievements of the Rokkaku clan, and is thought to have been written by someone related to the clan. There are two-volume and six-volume versions. The story centers on the Shoguns Ashikaga Yoshimitsu and Yoshinori, and covers the Meitoku and Oei Wars, the union of the Northern and Southern Courts, his appointment as Grand Minister of State, his move to the Kitayama Domain and his death (all by Yoshimitsu), the Uesugi Zenshū Rebellion (Yoshimochi), and the Eikyō and Kakitsu Wars (Yoshinori), but its value as a historical document is low. 南北朝時代より嘉吉の乱までの室町幕府の治乱を記した戦記物語。成立年代不明。六角氏の功績を多く記し，同氏に関係ある者の著作と考えられる。2巻本と6巻本がある。物語の中心は将軍足利義満と義教にあり，明徳･応永の乱，南北朝の合体，太政大臣任官，北山第移住とその死(以上義満)，上杉禅秀の乱(義持)，永享･嘉吉の乱(義教)などを記すが，その史料的価値は低い。《改定史籍集覧》所収。【鳥居和之】
