A general term for foundation work carried out on the ground to safely support a structure or for construction purposes. Also called "chigyo." If the ground is strong and can support a structure by itself, the ground surface is made as flat as possible, and then gravel stones are laid and thoroughly compacted (grained foundation work), after which concrete is poured on top before the structure can be constructed. If the ground is good, a thick layer of concrete may be poured directly on the ground. If the ground is weak, piles are driven into the ground (pile foundation work), and piers (columnar structures) and caissons are used as foundation work.
