A language used in Mesopotamia from about 3000 BC to the Christian era. It belongs to the Semitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family and is a Northeast Semitic language on its own. It is also called Assyro-Babylonian because it split into two major dialects, Assyrian and Babylonian, around 2000 BC. It is the oldest Semitic language chronologically, but it does not retain much of the Proto-Semitic language. This is thought to be because it was the first to split off from Proto-Semitic and was influenced by Sumerian, whose lineage is unclear. It is written in cuneiform, which was inherited and developed from the Sumerians, and the oldest document dates to about 2800 BC. It was gradually overtaken by Aramaic in the 7th and 6th centuries BC. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
