Tadahiro Aizawa

Japanese:
Tadahiro Aizawa

Archaeology researcher. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from the night school of Shotoku Elementary School. Although he grew up in an unfortunate environment due to his parents' divorce, he maintained an interest in archaeology and continued to collect stone tools while peddling small items. From 1948 to 1949, he discovered a piece of obsidian in the red soil of a cut in Iwajuku, Kasagake Village, Nitta County, Gunma Prefecture (now Midori City). As this was unearthed from a deep loam layer in the earth's stratum, he excavated it in 1949 in collaboration with the Meiji University Archaeology Laboratory, and discovered that the Iwajuku ruins dated to the Paleolithic period, making him the first discoverer of a Paleolithic ruin in Japan. In 1967, he received the Yoshikawa Eiji Prize for discovering the Iwajuku ruins. His books include his autobiography, "The Discovery of Iwajuku." He passed away on May 22, 1989.
