He first worked on research into the histology of nerve cells in the physiology laboratory of E. W. von Brücke, whom he had been frequenting since his student days, and then switched to clinical practice, doing clinical training in various departments at the Vienna University Hospital Das Wiener Allgemeine Krankenhaus (which is translated literally as "General Hospital" or "General Hospital" in all Japanese translations, but this is not appropriate). He worked in clinical practice for five months under Professor of Psychiatry T. Meynert, but his main research was basic research, and he conducted histological research into the conduction pathways of the medulla oblongata.
