A genus in the Liliaceae family (APG classification: Asparagaceae). A bulbous plant native to Europe, Africa, and Western Asia, with approximately 100 known species. The flowers have six tepals and grow in racemes or corymbs on leafless flower stalks. Most flowers are white, although yellow varieties are rare. Horticulturally superior varieties are cultivated for flower beds and for cut flowers.

It is suitable for flower beds and potted plants. O. thyrsoides Jacq. is native to South Africa, and produces dense white flowers in a panicle. It is cultivated for cut flowers as the flowers last a long time.
