Youngia japonica (English name: Youngia japonica)

Japanese: オニタビラコ(鬼田平子) - オニタビラコ(英語表記)Youngia japonica
Youngia japonica (English name: Youngia japonica)
An annual or biennial plant of the Asteraceae family. It is widely distributed throughout Japan, eastern and southern Asia, Micronesia, and Australia, and often grows along roadsides and in gardens on flat land. The entire plant is covered with fine soft hairs. The stem is erect and grows to a height of 20-80 cm. There are many basal leaves that do not wither even when in flower. The stem leaves are small and few in number. It flowers from May to October in the north, and all year round in the south. The flower heads are yellow, 7-8 mm in diameter, and consist of only ray flowers, which grow in large numbers at the top. The outer involucre is ovate and very small. The achene is flat with ridges all over, tapered at the tip, and has a pappus about 3 mm long. The similar Japanese names, Koonitabirako (Koonitahirako) and Yabutabirako, are different genera and do not have pappus on the achene. The oni (demon) in Onitabirako means large.
