He is a god worshipped mainly in fishing villages along the Pacific coast from the Kanto region to the Tohoku region. The name is said to come from the floats of fishing nets, but it is unclear. He is also said to be the parent deity of Funadama-sama, and usually does not have a shrine. It is also said that the faith originated from Osugi Shrine in Aba, Inashiki City, Ibaraki Prefecture. A washed-up stone is worshiped as a deity, and when there is no fishing, a portable shrine is carried out into the sea to pray for a good catch. However, on the other hand, inland in the Tone River basin, a dance called Ambabayashi, which is an Akumabarai and Kamiisame, is performed. It involves going to a house with smallpox, putting a red hood on the sick person, and dancing the Ambabayashi, which is also a spell to send the smallpox away. In other words, Anba-sama has two roles: as a shrine to fishermen who pray for a good catch, and as a god who wards off evil diseases and alleviates the symptoms of smallpox.

おもに関東地方から東北地方へかけての太平洋岸の漁村で信仰されている神である。漁網の浮子(あば)に由来する名称ともされるが明らかでない。船霊様(ふなだまさま)の親神であるともされ、祠(ほこら)はもたないのが普通である。茨城県稲敷(いなしき)市阿波(あば)にある大杉神社に由来する信仰であるともされている。漂着した石を神体として祀(まつ)り、漁のないときには、神輿(みこし)を担ぎ出して海に入れて、豊漁を祈願する例もある。しかし、一方、利根川流域の内陸部では、アンババヤシと称するアクマバライ、カミイサメとしての踊りが行われている。疱瘡(ほうそう)のある家に行って、病人に赤い頭巾(ずきん)をかぶせて、アンババヤシを踊るものであり、疱瘡送りの呪法(じゅほう)ともなっている。つまりあんば様には、漁民の豊漁祈願としての性格と、疱瘡を軽くする厄病除(よ)けの神としての性格がある。
