A perennial plant of the Cactaceae family. Native to Brazil. Often cultivated in pots. The stems are flat, branched and drooping. They are fleshy and consist of obovate or oblong nodes. In winter, beautiful crimson flowers measuring 6-9 cm in diameter appear at the stem nodes. The flowers are bilaterally symmetrical, with numerous perianths, many stamens and one pistil below the ovary. The Japanese name is said to come from the resemblance of the stems to crab legs.
