In plays, not only the Taoist priests but also monks would sing it, and the content of the song began to include satire on the foolishness and ugliness of the secular world. When singing, they would strike a drum called a gyogu, a bamboo tube with leather stretched on both ends, and two bamboo pieces (castanets) called jianzi.
