...It was first seen in the Tang Dynasty in the "Taoistic Poems" found in the Dunhuang manuscript (Stein No. 5648), and by the Song and Yuan Dynasties it had become a folk song, sung with lyrics of various lengths and rhythms. In plays, not only the Taoist priests but also monks would sing it, and the content of the song began to include satire on the foolishness and ugliness of the secular world. When singing, they would strike a drum called a gyogu, a bamboo tube with leather stretched on both ends, and two bamboo pieces (castanets) called jianzi. They would often sing to the tune of lyrics or sankyoku, and this popularity would continue into the following Ming and Qing Dynasties. ...
