Aida - Aida (English spelling)

Aida - Aida (English spelling)

Verdi's opera in four acts. It was composed at the request of Egyptian Pasha Ismaili, who built an opera house in Cairo to commemorate the opening of the Suez Canal. It premiered at the same theater in 1871. The drama tells the tragic love story between a young Egyptian general, Radames, and Aida, a captive princess of enemy Ethiopia. It is considered a masterpiece of grand opera, with many splendid scenes, such as exotic ceremonies and dances set in ancient Egypt, and a "triumphal procession" featuring a large crowd. Another characteristic of this work is that it highlights basic human emotions that transcend time and place, such as love and jealousy, hope and disappointment, woven together by a love triangle between Radames and Amneris, an Egyptian princess who is in love with him. Aided by a clear plot (libretto by Ghislanzoni), Verdi used music to beautifully depict the various elements of the drama, from the spectacular effect of the chorus in the "Triumph Scene" to the psychological portrayal of Aida, who is torn between her love for Radames and her love for her country ("Return Triumphant"), creating a magnificent and exquisite opera. Due to the motivation behind the creation of the work and its celebratory nature, Aida is often performed as an attraction at music festivals and to open opera seasons. In Japan, it premiered in 1919 (Taisho 8) by a Russian opera company. It was first performed by Japanese people in 1941 (Showa 16) by the Fujiwara Opera Company. It was also performed in 1982 (Showa 57) to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the founding of the Nikikai Association.
