…It was developed from the hot air balloon, but unlike the hot air balloon, the shape of the gas bag is usually streamlined for better flight. The first airship that could fly in a steerable manner was built in 1852 by Henri Giffard (1825-1882) of France. The spindle-shaped gas bag was 44 m long and 14 m in diameter, and was filled with hydrogen gas. It was powered by a steam engine and a propeller, giving it a speed of 8 km/h. …
