…It is believed that the beginning of this trend was Nishi Amane. He translated the American Joseph Haven's Mental Philosophy (1857) and published it as Psychology (1875-79). In the accompanying translation notes, he mentioned the difficulties he faced in coming up with translations, and stated that he would follow what had previously been used for words such as consciousness. Shortly thereafter, Tetsujiro Inoue and others published the Vocabulary of Philosophy (1881), which used the term Consciousness, and it is known that this word became established as a term in philosophy, psychology, etc. around this time. …
