A village in Shimajiri District, Okinawa Prefecture. It is located in the eastern part of the Chinen Peninsula in the southern part of Okinawa Island (the main island), and includes five islands, including Kudaka Island offshore. Population: 5,906 (1995). The southern half is a plateau separated by high cliffs, while the northern half has a gentle slope and a well-developed coastal lowland. Kudaka Island is a low-lying island made of raised coral reefs. Along with Tamagusuku Village to the west, it is known as a village with many myths and legends related to Amamikiyo, the creation god of Okinawa. Rice was once cultivated here, but now sugar cane and vegetable cultivation for shipping to the mainland have become popular. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
