In the Edo period, this was a law that ordered that lawsuits over gold and silver loans, accounts receivable, etc., be resolved mutually (between the parties involved), stating that public authority would not intervene. It was to be distinguished from the Kien Order, which meant that the debt itself was to be extinguished. Eight Orders for Resolving Debts were issued between 1661 (Kanbun 1) and 1843 (Tenpo 14). However, most of these merely denied the right to sue for past debts, and only three laws in 1702 (Genroku 15), 1719 (Kyoho 4), and 1746 (Enkyo 3) explicitly ordered that the matter be resolved mutually. The Kyoho 4 Order was the only one that did not limit the scope of application, and moreover, did not recognize any right to sue not only for past debts, but also for debts that would arise in the future, but it was abolished in 1729 (Kyoho 14) due to financial irregularities and other reasons.
