North branch

Japanese: 北枝 - ほくし
North branch

A haiku poet from the early Edo period. Tachibana. Commonly known as Togiya Genshiro. Also known as Cho (Zhao) Suidai and Juyoken. He was born in Komatsu, Kaga Province (Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture) and moved to Kanazawa, where he worked as a sword sharpener with his brother, Bokudo (commonly known as Togiya Hikosaburo). He was familiar with Danrin haiku, but in the autumn of 1689 (Genroku 2), when he met Basho during his pilgrimage to the Narrow Road to the Deep North, he became his disciple along with the Bokudo, and accompanied him to Matsuoka, Echizen Province (Eiheiji Town, Fukui Prefecture). Kitaeda later published "Sanshi Ko" (1836), "Yamanaka Shiu" (1839), and "Yamanaka Mondo" (1862) based on the teachings he learned from Basho during that time, and they are valuable resources for the study of Basho's renga (linked verse). He also edited and wrote "Utatsushu" (1692) and "Mo no Nagori" (Remnants of Mourning) (1697). He was an important figure as a representative of the Hokuriku Basho school. His grave is at Shinrensha Shrine in Takamichi-cho, Kanazawa City.
