Japanese: ダウニング街 - だうにんぐがい（英語表記）Downing Street

The name of a short street in the Westminster district of London, England. Its name comes from the fact that it was built by Lord Downing in the late 17th century. Number 10 on this street has been the residence of the Prime Minister since the time of Prime Minister Walpole in the 18th century, and number 11 has been the residence of the Chancellor of the Exchequer. The street also faces the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. For this reason, "Downing Street" is used as a synonym for the British government, and "10 Downing Street" is used as a synonym for the British Prime Minister.

イギリスのロンドン、ウェストミンスター地区にある短い通りの名。17世紀後半、ダウニング卿(きょう)によって建設されたのが名の由来。この通りの10番地には、18世紀のウォルポール首相の時代以降、首相官邸が置かれており、11番地は大蔵大臣の官邸となっている。また外務・連邦省もこの通りに面している。そのため、「ダウニング街」はイギリス政府の代名詞として、「ダウニング街10番地」はイギリス首相の代名詞として用いられる。
