(In the past, it was also written as "Sumida River, Sumida River, Tsunoda River, Sumita River") [1] A branch of the Arakawa River that flows through the eastern part of Tokyo. In the past, it was the downstream of the Tone River that flowed into Tokyo Bay. Before the revision of the River Law in 1965 , it referred to the downstream of the Arakawa River. Generally, it refers to the area downstream from Kanegafuchi in Sumida Ward, or from Iwabuchi in Kita Ward, where it branches off from the Arakawa River. In the Edo period, it was used as a transportation route, and icefish and laver were harvested here. The coast developed after the Meireki fire ( 1657 ). Many bridges were built after the Great Kanto Earthquake ( 1923 ). The area downstream from Azumabashi Bridge is also called the Asakusa River (Okawa). Total length 23.5 kilometers. Utamakura. A mother living in Kitashirakawa, Kyoto, in a mad state travels to the Sumida River in Musashi Province in search of her son Umewakamaru, who was kidnapped by a merchant. She learns from the boatman on the other side of the river that the boy she is searching for died there a year ago. As she weeps and chants a prayer in front of the boy's grave, the ghost of Umewakamaru appears. The mother searches for her son but in vain, and when dawn breaks, all that remains is the grave. This is a masterpiece of a madwoman story, and an unusual work that ends in tragedy. It had a great influence on later literary works. [3] (Sumida River) A novel. Written by Nagai Kafu. Published in 1909 ( Meiji 42 ). It depicts with a sad feeling the lives of ordinary people in the downtown area along the Sumida River, unfolding deep within the great current of modern civilization, as the seasons change. [4] A brand of sake from the Edo period. It was sold by Yamaya Hanzaburo (Yamahan) in Namiki-cho, Asakusa, Edo. It is said to be brewed using water from the Sumida River. (古くは「墨田川・墨田河・角田川・住田川」とも表記された)[一] 東京都東部を流れる荒川の分流。古くは東京湾に注いでいた利根川の下流。昭和四〇年（一九六五）の河川法改正以前は荒川の下流をさした。一般には墨田区鐘ケ淵から下流、または荒川から分流する北区岩淵から下流をいう。江戸時代はシラウオ・アサクサノリが採れ、交通路としても利用。沿岸は明暦の大火（一六五七）以後発展。関東大震災（一九二三）以後多数の橋がかけられた。吾妻橋から下流は浅草川（大川）とも呼ぶ。全長二三・五キロメートル。歌枕。都川。墨水(ぼくすい)。澄江(ちょうこう)。[二] 謡曲。四番目物。各流。観世十郎元雅作。人商人(ひとあきびと)にさらわれたわが子梅若丸のゆくえを尋ねて、京都北白川に住む母は狂乱の体で旅のすえ武蔵国隅田川にたどり着く。対岸に渡る船の中で船頭から、捜し求める子が一年前この地で死んだことを聞き、その塚の前で泣きながら念仏を唱えると、梅若丸の亡霊が現われる。母は子を追い求めるがむなしく消え、夜が明けてみると塚だけが残されていた。狂女物中の傑作で悲劇で終わる異色作。後世の文芸に大きな影響を与えた。[三] (すみだ川) 小説。永井荷風作。明治四二年（一九〇九）発表。近代文明の大きな流れの奥底にくりひろげられる隅田川畔の下町の庶民の生活を、哀感を込めて、季節の推移とともに描き出す。[四] 江戸時代の酒の銘柄の一つ。江戸浅草並木町山屋半三郎（山半）から売り出した。隅田川の水を用いての醸造という。隅田川諸白(もろはく)。※洒落本・通言総籬（1787）一「長崎屋のこはんが所から隅田川をもらった」
