〘noun〙 A type of sound change. For the sake of pronunciation, the consonants k, g, and s of "ki," "gi," and "shi" are dropped, mainly at the end of conjugated words, to become the "i" sound. This is the same as "kaite" becoming "kaite," "tsugigite" becoming "tsugi," "koroshite" becoming "koroshite," "atsuki" becoming "atsui," and " kisaki " becoming "kisai." In rare cases, it can also be seen with the sounds of r and t, as in "gozaimasu" becoming "gozaimasu" and "tatematsuru" becoming "taimatsuru." It first appeared in the early Heian period and has become more common since then. The modern adjective "━i" originates from the i sound change of the attributive form of the adjective "━ki" in literary Japanese. Also, the conjunctive form of the sa-row 4th row verbs does not become i sound change in modern common Japanese. ※Japanese Language Studies (1891)〈Sekine Masanao〉Ongaku "These sound changes are roughly divided into four types. First, I sound changes〈abbreviated〉Second, U sound changes" [Glossary] Sound changes have already been explained in Motoori Norinaga's "Thoughts on the Three Sounds of Kanji", but it includes cases such as "I and I sound changes" such as "shiika" for "shiika", "shiji" for "shiji", and "keishi" for "keishi". The term "I sound changes" became widespread in the latter half of the Meiji period.
