The Outline of Chinese Dialects, co-authored by Yuan Jiahua and others and published in 1960, divides present-day Chinese dialects into eight major categories: (1) Northern dialect, (2) Wu dialect, (3) Xiang dialect, (4) Gan dialect, (5) Hakka dialect, (6) Yue dialect, (7) Southern Min dialect, and (8) Northern Min dialect.
