…Until then, research had mostly focused on moderate liberal forces, but after Gramsci, research into the ideas, organizations, and movements of democratic forces progressed, and consideration was given in depth to the issues that prevented democratic political leadership from forming an alliance with the social movements of the people. In response to this trend in research, Rosario Romeo, a historian with a liberal view of history, began to raise a new issue in the late 1950s. This was the issue of the development of capitalism and industrialization in Italy. From this point of view, he argued that it was inevitable that the northern industrial bourgeoisie would establish dominance and that the southern peasants would be sacrificed, and while criticizing Gramsci, he defended the moderate liberal solution to the Risorgimento. …
